2022

ДЕТИ / Dety (Russian: "children") / ДЕ ТИ / De Ty (Ukrainian: "Where are you?")
- Acrylic on canvas, 160 × 200 cm.
198 children were killed and 385 were injured. These were the official figures reported on 15 April 2022.
The painting is based on the repeated Russian word ДЕТИ ("children"). During the early months of the full-scale invasion, this word was painted in large letters near shelters, schools, and other places where children were staying, in the hope of warning the attackers not to target them.
At the same time, when visually separated as ДЕ ТИ in Ukrainian, the phrase reads "Where are you?", transforming the word into a question about absence, loss, and disappearance.
I created this painting shortly after arriving in Zurich, in early April 2022.
